Is it worth paying someone to rewrite your resume?
Asked by Faith
Hubby has posted his resume on Monster but hasn't heard much. He's thinking it must be a problem with his resume. Is it worth getting someone from Monster to rewrite for $200 or are there other services out there we could use?
A:
No it isn't worth it. Tell him to go to a Temp Agency. They will help him for free.

IF they are really good, yes (not very likely). Get a guarantee.
Or look for someone you know who is good at this kind of thing!
A good resume can make all the difference.

I would never pay any one to rewrite my resume. Their are so many ways to have it done with no charge. As a tip... when you send a resume from a website, it will carry thier logo. Its always better to fax if possible that way you know exactly how its going to look when they recive it.

You can use resume help books. Also, the best tool for fine tuning a resume is networking. Ask a hiring manager what's wrong with the resume. You could end up with some great advice. I work in HR. I always say the best person to evaluate a resume is someone who actually uses them to evaluate a candidate.

I don't believe it costs $200 to rewrite a resume. Basically, all you need is to see an example of a resume and revise it according to what you see. Since your husband has most of the work done, it just needs to be changed a little. Delete the jobs that does not relate to the job that he's applying to. A resume should be a maximum of one page. I would say that $20 is enough to rewrite a resume.

I cant find work either and have 20 years experience! Work is hard to find right now. Has been hard for about 5 years.
I have always written my own resume.
Maybe he needs someone to proof read it really well for him.
State employment offices have all kinds of tipps for writing a good resume. I personally, would not pay for this service because no one knows his skill better than himself.

Its better if you do it yourself, thoroughly, slowly and a little painstakingly. There are a lot of internet sites that you can browse through for tips and examples on how to go about a resume that best fits your husband´s credentials. In this way, the resume is personal and you know what is in there for eventual interviews.
Goodluck! Dont worry, the right job for him may just be around the corner. Keep it up!

I was recently made redundant after 25 yrs of employment by one company, and as part of our package they arranged for a Recruitment co. to do a resume for each employee that requested it. I'm sure if your husband shops around he could find a recruitment agency that would be willing to do it for free, or possibly his local unemployment office could give him the name of a company they recommend. Usually the unemployment office will provide this service for free themselves.
If that fails, look up the Internet for tips and pointers and do up one yourself. Good luck with the job hunting

Absolutely not. Nobody knows you better than you. That is such a scam. The best resumes come from the original writer and proofread by other people for free.

If a bad resume means no job offers, and a good one means job offers he wants, it seems to me that $200 is cheap enough. There are a LOT of services out there, some know what they're doing, some don't. Depending on what experience he has and what he's looking for, using an agency like Robert Half might be expensive, but pay big dividends in what he winds up with.
A few points about resumes to bear in mind, though.
One, they don't get you hired. Interviews do that. Resumes get interviews, if they get into the right hands.
Two, you may need more than one resume, to tailor to the kind of jobs you want. What's appropriate for one job may be a killer for another.
Three, a way to circulate the resume and get feedback on improving it at the same time is shop it to people that might have influence, and just ask for feedback. Not asking for a job, just "do you think this is good, how can it be better" and if they know someone, so much the better.

Let me first say- it is extremely hard to find a job right now, no matter what the profession may be. Making your own resume can be difficult sometimes. If you or he are not completely satisfied with your own work, then- YES- it is worth paying someone. However, there are much cheaper off-line resume services. Shop around! If you do decide to keep your own, just remember- Keep It Short! All information given with as little space possible. - KC Atl, Ga

DON'T DO IT. Go to Barnes and Noble or other well known book store and buy a resume book for $24.95. I use The Gallery of Best Resumes by David F. Noble. The publisher is JIST Works.
USE A CHRONOLOGICAL RESUME and not a Functional Resume. I learned the hard way on this. I used the Functional Resume for years and never got any replies. Why? It hid the time frame when I actually was employed. A Chronological
Resume lists your employers with the exact dates that you
were employed at the company.
There are plenty of really good career sites on the web. I recommend CAREER BUILDER. I put my resume on this site
also MONSTER.COM All responses I received came from
CAREER BUILDER. I did not get any from Monster.com
GET ALL YOUR CAREER ADVICE FROM THE WEB FREE!
Just enter "career counseling" in the search field on Yahoo. I printed several really good articles from MSN on interview skills,
resumes, and all types of related articles.
Don't spend money. If you do, spend it only one time.
ALWAYS REMEMBER. The career articles and career advice
is mostly OPINION. Very little of what you hear is FACT. The
job market is always changing. You will change too as you
collect experience.
Good luck

No its not worth it. besides you might win an interview and still be lost there. Its better of writing your self. Taking some resume writing class or workshop is worthit, you learn the techniques, know what you wrote and know your way around. If people can know your resume isn't good enough for interview or reply, wont they know on interview that was defenitely not written by you? I would say not worth paying for. Resume shows your personality within that piece of paper. If you're not preparing it you're not showing your personality. If you think your resume have flaws just take some workshops, that is worthit.

No, a CV designed yourself is the best. You know that for which job you would like to highlight which skills. Best to apply not only online but to different sites like Yahoo jobs, also reply to newspaper ads and other sites. Don't just depend on one site and don't waste money writing a professional CV, better to spend that money saving up.

$200.00 seems a bit steep. I think it is worth it to go to a resume writing class. This will force him to go through his own work history and learn how to organize and present it in the most appealing way possible, and will give him skills to apply to future resumes, or to update his resume or reevaluate it according to the type of work he is looking for. For example, I have two resumes; one which emphasizes technical skills and the other which emphasizes administrative skills. Of course, now I'm thinking about pursuing a career in the medical professions so that will require a third resume, as soon as I build up some work history in that field! I was laid off a job and my company hired a resume consultant to give a class to the people being laid off. Some people didn't attend because they were too upset about losing their jobs. I attended and there were only 4 people so I got a lot of personalized attention. It was the best think ever for my resume. Not only did I end up with the best resume, but the consultant's company provided a free printing service and you could request professionally printed copies up to a certain number, at no extra charge, plus the computer disk the copies were made from. So, if you're thinking of spending $200.00, don't just turn it over to someone else to do (they may not do as good a job as you like) but take a resume writing class.
Good luck and I hope he finds a job soon!

There is probably a job shop in the city that can help him out with that. Check it out in the phone book or online. They can help with some good guidelines on what makes a good resume.
Putting resumes on online sites aren't the best thing to rely on solely. He should look for jobs he'd like and also bring over his resumes himself.

I suppose it depends on how badly your husband needs or wants a new job and if you think his resume as it is is badly written and is the cause of him not finding a job. $200 is not very much if his resume is as bad as he thinks.

It is always worth learning how to put your best foot forward!
Going on and on --nine yards long--just because you have so much to say, does NOT help you! Like in all marketing principles,
Highlight YOUR strenghts and plus points to suit the requirements of the job!
But $ 200 may be too steep for this job.
Give it some serious thought, and put forward ALL YOUR BEST strong points -- in keeping with what the Employer is looking for!
